MILWAUKEE – Meg Kissinger, an award-winning journalist and now author will be the guest speaker at a special evening Newsmaker event set for Wednesday, October 11, hosted by the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 6 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells Street in Milwaukee.
Kissinger, who won numerous national and local awards for her work at The Milwaukee Journal and its successor, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, will discuss her book and her family’s journey through decades of mental illness.
Released last month by Celadon Books, While You Were Out begins as the personal story of one family’s struggles, according to the publisher’s summary, then opens outward as Kissinger details how childhood tragedy catalyzed a journalism career focused on exposing our country’s flawed mental health care. Combining the intimacy of memoir with the rigor of investigative reporting, the book explores the consequences of shame, the havoc of botched public policy, and the hope offered by new treatment strategies.
Said one reviewer: “Kissinger’s first book on family, mental illness, and recovery catapults her into the pantheon of modern, nonfiction writers who dare to feel, think, and unabashedly portray the agony of mental disorders and the hope needed to find a path to a life of relationships, contribution, and self-respect.”
Boswell Book Company will be on site to sell books. The cost is $31.65, including tax. Credit, debit, and mobile pay accepted. No cash or checks.
There is no charge to attend but registration is encouraged. The press club’s Newsmakers are held to inform the public about the people and issues that affect individuals and communities in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Advanced registration may be done online at https://milwaukeepressclub.org/events/.
