Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression: No more deaths in Milwaukee County jails

[MILWAUKEE,WI] – On Thursday, March 16th, 2023, there was another death inside Milwaukee County Jail. The victim is a 37 year-old male, who is yet to be identified. The press has reported that he was found unconscious in his cell following a routine medication pass. On Tuesday, March 21, the Justice for Brieon Green Coalition will be holding a picket in front of the Milwaukee County Safety Building on State Street at 5:30PM

Members of the Justice for Brieon Green Coalition met with Sheriff Denita Ball a few months ago. At this meeting, Sheriff Ball promised to allow for members of the Coalition to tour the Milwaukee County Jail and that her office would upload the Standard Operating Procedures to their website. She also promised that she would continue to be “transparent” with Green’s family. Since that meeting, Sheriff Ball has not fulfilled her promises and has not been transparent.

This death marks the third since we met with Sheriff Ball. How many more deaths need to happen until there is accountability and change inside the Milwaukee County Jail? Milwaukee cannot keep waiting on Sheriff Ball, for lives are at stake. The Justice for Brieon Green Coalition is demanding the following:

  • MCSO to allow members of the Justice for Brieon Green Coalition to tour the jail
  • MCSO to hold a public town hall with Denita Ball now
  • Transparency in all cases and in how the jail operates
  • Independent (non-law enforcement) investigations into the deaths and into the conditions of the jail

We met with Sheriff Ball in good faith, but her lack of transparency and accountability make it evident that she has no intention in rectifying the way her office operates the jail. No more deaths in Milwaukee County Jail!
