Descendant Community of Milwaukee County Grounds Cemeteries: Join us in honoring our veterans

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Descendant Community of Milwaukee County Grounds Cemeteries, in collaboration with our esteemed community partners, is excited to announce the upcoming Veterans Memorialization Ceremony. We invite the public to join us for 1.5 hours in commemorating the service and sacrifices of our veterans at Milwaukee County Grounds Park – Cemetery 3 on November 11th, 2023, at 11:00 AM.

This profound and unifying event offers an opportunity for our community to come together and pay tribute to the heroes of the past. It’s a chance to ensure that these courageous individuals receive the recognition and respect they truly deserve.

Please be aware that there will be no restroom facilities available at the event site, so we recommend planning accordingly.

The event will take place rain or shine, and all are welcome. Please bring a lawn chair to witness the Grand Army of the Republic’s 1917 Headstone Rededication Service, performed by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and their Ladies’ Auxiliary, Company F 29th US Colored Troops, the Iron Brigade Guard, The Regimental Volunteer Band, and Camp 1’s bugler, Bill Seaman.

In collaboration also with Milwaukee County, the Parks Department, Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Greater Milwaukee Fire & Police Pipes & Drums, this ceremony promises to be a memorable and respectful gathering. 

Distinguished speakers, including Andy Gordon, Chairman of Milwaukee County’s War Memorial Center; Shawn Rolland, Milwaukee County Supervisor – Wauwatosa; Rick Flowers, Milwaukee County VA Service Director; and Lee Kelley, Director of the Southern WI Veterans Memorial Center, will share their thoughts and reflections. In the event of good weather, bagpiper Tom McKale will conclude the program with a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

This ceremony is the result of the collective efforts of numerous individuals and organizations who have joined forces to ensure the proper recognition of our veterans.
