NEENAH, Wis. – Two leaders have joined the ThedaCare Board of Trustees, the governing body for the local, not-for-profit health care organization.
Jim Kotek, President and CEO of Menasha Corporation and Chair of the ThedaCare Board of Trustees, announced Laurie Carter and Mary Goggans have been elected to the Board in early 2022.
“The Board of Trustees supports ThedaCare’s mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve, while providing financial and quality oversight and strategic decision-making,” said Kotek. “Our Board members are dedicated to helping the organization reinvent health care by empowering each person to live their unique, best life through our leadership in wellness, prediction, prevention and healing.”

Laurie Carter is the 17th president of Lawrence University, where she assumed the position in July 2021. Before joining Lawrence University in Appleton, Carter served as president of Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, where her tenure focused on prioritizing student success, telling the university’s story, building a relationship with the community, enhancing overall quality, and strengthening diversity and inclusion. Her extensive leadership experience in higher education also extends to Eastern Kentucky University and The Juilliard School.

In addition to the care delivered, ThedaCare provides support for many community initiatives and programs – taking a new approach to health care by understanding the people in our population, getting ahead of health events before they occur, and providing care when health issues begin.”
A native of New Jersey, Carter attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where she received a bachelor of science degree in communications. She received her masters of arts in communications from William Paterson College and earned her JD from Rutgers University. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Snow College and is a member of the Clarion University Athletics Hall of Fame, in recognition of her outstanding undergraduate career in track and field.
Mary Goggans is President of Encapsys, LLC, and a member of the Encapsys board of directors and executive committee. Previously, Goggans was Vice President and General Manager of the Encapsys division of Appvion, Inc. She joined Appvion in 2012 as Director of Corporate Development and Innovation and moved to the Encapsys division where she served as Executive Director and General Manager from 2013-2014. Since being named President of Encapsys, LLC, Goggans created a new company and built a new innovation headquarters in Appleton. She accelerated innovation, doubled headcount and helped create a company culture that has resulted in doubled sales and profitability in the first five years.
“We know it takes more than a health system to achieve better health for all those living in Northeast and Central Wisconsin,” said Goggans. “As a member of the ThedaCare Board of Trustees, I will continue to develop partnerships that support the vision and passion for a strong, healthy community, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
Prior to joining Appvion, Goggans had a long career at Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Her career started in research and development, moved to operations management, and spent the majority of her time in marketing and sales across most of the company’s major brands. Goggans earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley and The New North.
