Event aims to raise awareness about all forms of arthritis in juveniles and adults

ALLOUEZ, Wis. (June 1, 2022) – Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists (OSMS), a physician-owned orthopedic, sports medicine, rheumatology, and pain management practice with locations throughout Northeast Wisconsin, is excited to announce its participation in the Walk to Cure Arthritis on Sunday, June 5 at Green Isle Park in Allouez.

OSMS rheumatologist Dr. Suraiya Afroz is a Medical Honoree at the event, and her patient, Allison Alberts, is the Adult Honoree at the event. Allison was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at 12-years-old. She has worked most of her life with rheumatologists to find ways to cope with her disease and go through life as pain-free as possible. She is now graduating from UW-La Crosse with a major in biomedical science and minors in chemistry and nutrition. Allison is working on becoming a pediatric rheumatologist.

“Growing up with JIA has come with many struggles; however, I have had incredible doctors and nurses, along with the support from my family, friends and the Arthritis Foundation,” explained Allison. “I wouldn’t be here without all that support, and I hope to be able to help others the same way so many have helped me.”

Dr. Afroz is a board-certified rheumatologist at OSMS who practices at OSMS’ Fox Valley location in Neenah. She is passionate about taking care of patients and building meaningful relationships with them. That is why the Walk to Cure Arthritis is an event she is committed to and is even more excited to participate in with her patient.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Arthritis Foundation at this event, but even more honored to have influenced Allison into this career,” Dr. Afroz said. “Rheumatology is always changing, but the need continues to grow. It’s why searching for a cure remains a top priority in this country and why I support events like this.”

OSMS is made up of 17 orthopedic physicians, six rheumatologists, and one pain management physician who see patients in Green Bay, Neenah, Marinette, Chilton, Oconto Falls, and Oshkosh. Patients come first at OSMS, and services include a walk-in acute injury clinic, an onsite surgery center and onsite infusion suites within the rheumatology department.
