Stoughton, Dane County, WI. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Stoughton Municipal Power Plant No. 1in the National Register of Historic Places on August 12, 2022.
The Stoughton Municipal Power Plant No. 1 was erected in 1911 to serve as the flagship hydro-electric power plant for the community. One of three plants constructed by the City of Stoughton, and the only plant located within city limits, it was operated by the city until the mid-1970s. The building is representative of the municipally-owned electrical utility system, and the planning effort by the city to provide reliable and affordable electrical service.
The power plant was designed by the Power Engineering Company with builder George W. Becker in the Romanesque Revival style. It is a tall, one-story building that features masonry construction, round arches with keystones surrounding window and door fenestration, and a large, round arched parapet highlighting the street façade.
