Wisconsin Woodchucks: Recipient of minor league sports grant

Wausau, WI — Governor Evers announced Tuesday that the Wisconsin Woodchucks are one of 17 recipients of a grant made available to minor league sports teams throughout Wisconsin as part of the Minor League Sports Grant that was announced last summer. The grants are funded by the American Rescue Plan of 2021. The Woodchucks 2020 season was operated at extremely low-capacity limits causing attendance to drop by 80%. The 2021 season was better, but still below pre-pandemic levels. Despite the large drop in revenues, the Woodchucks have continued to employ all full-time and summer staff; not one person was laid off.

Support from ticket holders, the corporate community, the City of Wausau, Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, and Marathon County Health Department helped us navigate through this difficult time. We want to thank everyone for their help.

“The Woodchucks are an important community asset for Wausau and all of Central Wisconsin,” said Woodchucks Owner Mark Macdonald. “We would like to thank Governor Evers for recognizing the important role that Minor League teams have throughout Wisconsin and for helping to secure the long-term stability of these great organizations throughout the State.”

The Woodchucks are excited to return to play 2022 season on May 31st, 2022, at the Athletic Park.
