Located north of Racine St, and just west of Jackson Ave in downtown Jefferson, HomeWire has partnered with Heckaman Homes of Nappanee, IN to build 5 new homes in 2022 to serve a particular group of home buyers: essential workers.
“We’re talking about firemen, police, nurses, our average income people, the essential workers that got us through everything this past year,” said Melissa “Missy” Buttrum who established HomeWire in 2013. “We like to call it ‘essential homes for essential workers’. We’re going to be coming right under the $400,000 mark for beautiful ranch style, three bedroom, two bathroom homes with a main floor laundry, 2-car garages and full basements.
“Finding quality homes with affordable pricing is particularly challenging in today’s housing market because of a lower housing inventory,” Missy added. “There’s 10, 20 people to one house. New build prices are going up as well because the existing home prices are going up. So, it’s been really hard to find affordable housing.”
Heckaman Homes is a modular build company and their homes are all stick built, dry walled, regular homes, but they’re built in a factory setting. This eliminates the problem of moisture getting the homes, especially in places like Wisconsin where the snow and other weather elements hamper the building process.
“The homes actually arrive in pieces,” said Buttrum. “So, they’re going to come over, the particular ones we’re building out here in Jefferson, they’re going to come on two trucks, two halves, and they fit together almost like a puzzle piece. My husband, Chris, and I have five lots that were approved in this subdivision. We’re going to have four of the homes this spring of 2022, come from Heckaman and be placed on the foundation. And then there’ll be one more, the fifth one coming around the fall of 2022.”
