Dane Buy Local: Recognizes GHC-SCW with 2021 Legacy Award

Madison, WI – When someone says buy local, you might immediately think of locally-grown food or locally-made art. But buying local means purchasing any service provided by locally-owned businesses, including where you get your health care and health insurance.

Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW), locally-owned by members of the Cooperative, recently received the Dane Buy Local 2021 Legacy Award, which is given to a local business that is making a long-term positive impact in Dane County.

“GHC does great things in the community and has been a long-time member and annual supporter of Dane Buy Local,” said Colin Murray, Dane Buy Local Executive Director. “Their mindset is quite different than a lot of health care organizations out there in terms of how they do business and interact with other organizations. I thought it was very appropriate that the committee decided to recognize GHC’s commitment to our community. GHC is now a part of an elite group of Legacy Award recipients as only a few area businesses have received this honor.”

GHC-SCW is Wisconsin’s first and Dane County’s only member-owned, non-profit health care cooperative. GHC began providing medical services on March 1, 1976 with the vision of providing a better, local health care experience by bringing insurance and the delivery of care together. The focus in 1976 is the same focus GHC-SCW still has today – doing what’s best for the member and the community.

“Commitment to community is so important to GHC-SCW that it is one of our five common values that we live by each day,” said Mark Huth, GHC-SCW President and Chief Executive Officer. “For over 45 years, we’ve worked to cultivate meaningful and impactful partnerships with the community by providing resources and contributing to local organizations that make a difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors. We are humbled and honored to accept this award on behalf of the 75,000 Cooperative members and remain steadfast in the work done by many to help our communities be better together.”

GHC-SCW was one of 10 area businesses recognized this year in a variety of categories at the 2021 Dane Buy Local BIZ awards ceremony held virtually on October 7.
