Cambridge, Wisc., April 16, 2021 — Canndigenous launches as the first Native American owned CBD hemp company in Wisconsin. The vertically integrated company includes an organic hemp farm, consumer wellness products and Ripley Green retail apothecary location, all founded by serial entrepreneur and proud member of the Bad River Tribe Rob Pero. The unique alignment offers locally grown, organic CBD produced with a commitment to natural, transparent, and sustainable practices.
Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is believed by many to provide health benefits and may help with managing anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. Pero and the Canndigenous team are committed to honoring Indigenious heritage and Pero’s Ojibwe roots with a wellness-focused approach, transparent practices and a sincere commitment to bettering the health of the greater good. Like preceding generations of Ojibwe people, Pero’s core values are rooted around tenets of love for family, support for community, respect for the natural world and a commitment to doing everything, as the Ojibwe say, “in a good way”.
“At Canndigenous, this commitment to do things “in a good way” is not just an affirmation of our Ojibwe roots,” says Pero. “It’s a daily mandate and a driving force in everything we do. It’s a spiritual stance with tangible actions that lead us to produce health-focused CBD products.”
After the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which allows farms to grow hemp for the purpose of extracting CBD, Pero saw an opportunity to use CBD for the betterment of his Indigenous relatives. All steps from production, processing, packaging and resulting biomass of Canndigenous’ CBD products are executed with a unique thoughtfulness to sustainability, safety, and Indigenous roots.
Native Americans have historically experienced disproportionate levels of socio-economic challenges versus the greater population. Higher employment rates, lower median incomes, greater instances of substance abuse and drug addiction, and limited access to mental health support are but a few of the obstacles. Canndigenous seeks to employ Indigenous people and provides a product that can provide natural, safe and beneficial wellness alternatives to harmful and addictive pharmaceuticals.
Canndigenous is an active member of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (AICCW) who provided mentorship in developing the Canndigenous business plan and funding strategy. Since their inception in 1991, AICCW has remained committed to providing statewide advocacy, networking, one-to-one business management counseling and access to financial products and services to Wisconsin-based American Indian business people.
