FVSA: Welcomes Dr. Smith & adds Acute Care

(Appleton, Wis.) – Fox Valley Surgical Associates (FVSA) has announced that Christopher Smith, MD, an experienced general and acute care surgeon, will be joining its team on July 6 as the practice adds Acute Care to its service line.

With this addition, Dr. Smith will help expedite the treatment of urgent and emergent patients through FVSA’s practice within ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Appleton. He will offer same-day consultations as available and urgent procedures. Services will include general surgery, endoscopy, laparoscopy, port placement and inpatient/outpatient consults with recommendations for a treatment plan. The hospital administration has also set aside added resources to allow timely care of these urgent patients.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Smith to Appleton and offer patients acute care that’s top-level and close to home,” said Callie Springstroh, Director of Operations for FVSA. “This is an exciting step forward for FVSA as we continue to grow our practice and diversify the types of specialty care provided based on patient needs.”

Dr. Smith has been practicing for the past 20 years, most recently at West Allis Memorial Hospital as the Chief of Surgery. Throughout his career, he has also served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery and Vice Chief of Surgery. His special interests range from gastrointestinal surgery and complex hernias to endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery.

One of the things Dr. Smith says he enjoys most about his role is seeing patients thrive after surgery. He knew medicine was his calling from a young age and explained, “When I was just 8 years old, I needed multiple surgeries. The appreciation I had for all of the medical staff convinced me that this was a field I wanted to pursue in the future.”

After graduating from Marquette University in Milwaukee with his bachelor’s degree in biology, Dr. Smith earned his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin. He received internship and residency training in general surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and then completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Saint Louis University.

Dr. Smith is a four-time recipient of the “Top Doctors in Colorectal Medicine” distinction from Milwaukee Magazine and M Magazine. He belongs to the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society.

When he’s not working, Dr. Smith likes to stay active through golfing, alpine skiing, and cycling. He also enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with his family. His other hobbies include single engine aviation and sailing.
