Whitewater, Wis.—Feb. 17, 2017—The Greater Whitewater Committee, Inc. (GWC) is thrilled to welcome, Whitewater native, Dawson Miller as the race director for the 2017 Discover Whitewater Series (DWS): Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay and 5K, scheduled for Sept. 17, 2017.

Miller has volunteered with DWS since its start in 2013. He is an avid runner and ran for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk men’s cross country and track and field teams from 2011-15. Miller is currently in his second season as an assistant coach to the UW-W cross country teams and is the director of operations for the track and field programs.

“DWS has combined two of my favorite things, running and the City of Whitewater. It has always been a great experience,” Miller said. “The entire community comes together to put on this race, and it shows some of the great things Whitewater has to offer. Growing up in Whitewater my entire life I’ve always enjoyed all the major events that the city hosts. I am excited to now have a major role in one of those events and can’t wait to contribute to the race and the community.”

Miller graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in finance from UW-W in 2015 and is now working towards his MBA at the university.

He was a NCAA All-Midwest Region and second team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree in 2014. Miller was a six-time All-American in track and field and in 2015 he won the national championship in the steeplechase with a career-best time of 8:46.58. He ended his career as the school record holder in the steeplechase, the indoor 3,000-meter run and the distance medley relay. He was also a UW-W Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete and team captain in 2015.

“On behalf of the Discover Whitewater Series team, we are thrilled to have Dawson as our race director for 2017,” Executive Director Jeffery Knight said. “His racing background and credentials are truly amazing and therefore he will understand the needs of all our runners.”

The goal of the DWS is to promote the City of Whitewater and highlight its greatest features. All the proceeds from the race are donated to five local non-profit partners: Bethel House (which provides interim housing for homeless families), UW-W Athletics, Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3), Whitewater Unified School District and the J-Hawk Aquatic Club. The DWS partners with the university, school district, city and business community to make this a tremendous event that benefits all who participate.
