40Plus of Southeastern Wisconsin celebrates 40 years of Milwaukee job seeker support

Milwaukee, Wis. – September 22, 2016 – 40Plus of Southeastern Wisconsin will hold a 40th anniversary celebration on October 5, 2016, 6:30 pm – 9:00 p.m., at St. Dominic Church, Marcy Center, 18255 West Capitol Drive, Brookfield, Wisconsin 53045.

For the past 40 years, 40Plus, a non-profit, has helped area jobseekers navigate the process to successful employment, without charge. Formerly known as the Bill Needler Job Forum, 40Plus was started in 1976 by two local human resources professionals who saw an unmet need for job seekers without employer-funded outplacement help.

Dennis Cherne, President of 40Plus of Southeastern Wisconsin, said, “The tools of job search have changed over the years. Before, it was the Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee Sentinel, Chicago Tribune and New York Times for job ads. Today it is computers, phones, online applications, and social media. 40Plus has survived by people reaching out to help others after they themselves have been helped. This is the bond that makes this group so strong. 40Plus will continue to help people in career transition for free, as long as there are willing volunteers.”

40Plus weekly speaker presentation meetings and smaller interactive support groups have educated jobseekers, motivated them, and connected them to employers and formed a supportive community. Whether through a presentation with 70 people or a one-on-one with a volunteer, 40Plus sets the gold standard on how to network professionally and find a new job.

Ellie Mixter-Keller, a volunteer with 40Plus, said, “40Plus helps jobseekers discover that they are not alone, others are struggling in their search, too. This takes some pressure off. They will find emotional support, are held accountable, learn today’s best practices, and practice talking about their employer value to a live audience. That practice builds confidence, energy and enthusiasm. And helped me discover a new career path.”

40Plus connects jobseekers to a free supportive community to help them successfully navigate their career transitions. With informational posts and presentations, hands-on workshops, and one-on-one coaching, volunteer leaders and employment partners meet the tactical, emotional and logistical needs of jobseekers with positivity, accountability and compassion.
