Youth to be honored and scholarships presented at 31st Annual Sunday Breakfast

Over 400 youth registered to explore science & volunteer service on Monday

31st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast

The Urban League of Greater Madison hosts one of the largest family observances of the King Holiday in Wisconsin. On Sunday, January 18th, the Urban League will recognize 234 outstanding middle and high school students before a sell-out crowd of more than 850 parents, school teachers and administrators, elected officials, community leaders, and their peers.

The League received a record number of nominees this year from 35 different public and private middle and high schools in Dane County. The Outstanding Young Person Awards will be awarded to students, who were nominated based on excellence in three areas: academic performance; extra-curricular involvement at their school; and leadership and volunteerism in the community. Four area high school students will also be presented with Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship awards. The scholarship fund was created to honor one of Madison’s most dynamic and visionary leaders after her passing in April 1999. The Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of graduating seniors seeking to further their education beyond high school, with special attention given to those who have faced particular economic and/or social obstacles on their journey to educational advancement.

Also to be announced are the Madison Metropolitan School District’s 2015 Mann Scholars, Creative Writing Award to be presented by the Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the recipients of the Agrace Minority CNA Scholars Program winner.

Youth Day of Service 2015

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative.

Registration had to be closed as over 400 Madison-area middle and high school students signed up to join with others across the nation by remembering the struggle for civil rights, celebrating the progress that has been made, and acting to address the issues that still challenge our community. The first half of the day will take place at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery on the University of Wisconsin Campus. Students will explore how science and service intersect through workshops, learning labs, and exploration stations. Students will then spend the second half of the day engaged in volunteer projects.

Locally, the event is hosted through a partnership between the Urban League of Greater Madison, The Madison-Dane County Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition, and the Town Center at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery.
