Summit Credit Union, headquartered in Madison, WI., received the Outstanding Business Award from the Greater Madison Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals to celebrate National Philanthropy Day. Upon receiving the award, Kim Sponem, CEO and President of Summit Credit Union, spoke about the credit union’s commitment to educate children about money and thanked the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County for the nomination. The award was partially based on Summit’s idea to start a credit union for at-risk children.
STAR Credit Union, now celebrating 10 years, is the only credit union in the world chartered to children. STAR (Saving to Achieve Results), located inside the Boys and Girls Club, has more than 600 young members. Summit Credit Union supports the credit union financially and a staff person teaches at-risk children how to run their credit union as well as how to save and manage their money. The award also praised Summit Credit Union for opening credit unions in three high schools, presenting student scholarships and providing financial education seminars to young people through schools and youth organizations.
More than 450 people attended the sell-out event which honored seven businesses and individuals for their philanthropic efforts.
