Milwaukee, WI – José A. Olivieri, chair of the Labor and Employment Relations Practice Group at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, was recently named a 2015 Leader in the Law by Wisconsin Law Journal. The list celebrates attorneys who are leaders both in their profession and their community.
Throughout his 33 years with Michael Best, Mr. Olivieri has demonstrated outstanding leadership both at the Firm and in the community. He founded the Firm’s business-focused Immigration and Internal Migration practice that has now grown to include six active professionals. He has also worked to develop the Higher Education Law practice at Michael Best, which has become an important asset and strategic niche service area for the Firm.
Mr. Olivieri has served as Chair of various community organizations, including the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association (Founder and Chair), the Employment and Labor Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Public Library Foundation. While dedicated to many community service efforts, a bulk of his time has been dedicated to the United Community Center and during his tenure, the UCC has gone from a $700,000 operating budget to a $20 million operation with 300 employees, a school with over 1,000 enrolled students, 59 elderly housing units, an extensive arts program, a home buying clinic, a community exercise facility, and resource for mental health and drug addiction treatment.
In addition to his active role with the UCC, he has served on the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, the Carroll University board, the Mount Mary University board, and as principal outside counsel for Milwaukee Area Technical College. He has also represented other colleges and universities. Because of his interest in education and well-developed insights in this area, Mr. Olivieri has twice served on the committee for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor search, once serving as its chair. Additionally, Mr. Olivieri has served as a law professor at Marquette University as both a full-time faculty member and adjunct professor.
Mr. Olivieri will be honored at a Wisconsin Law Journal event on March 18 at the Pfister Hotel.
