In the face of exceptionally challenging commodities markets, Joy Global today announced plans to temporarily idle work in its Milwaukee heavy fabrication and welding department starting in late November.

The plans were announced to affected employees today in conjunction with the mailing of a temporary WARN notice to affected employees. Though an official WARN notice was not required, Joy Global wanted its employees to have access to the government resources available to employees affected by such a notice.

This notice of temporary idling does not affect all areas of Milwaukee manufacturing. Joy Global’s machinery and motor shops, distribution center, and other departments are not covered by this WARN notice.

“Given the challenging mining market and the lower demand for products, we have to temporarily adjust some of our manufacturing operations to account for foreseeable workloads,” said John Koetz, president of surface mining for Joy Global. “We are doing everything we can to help our employees manage this news and prepare for the temporary layoffs to come.”

Joy Global has been supplying the mining industry for more than 130 years and is known for providing direct service, as well as equipment and products for the global mining industry.
