Culligan water treatment solution reduces lead and other contaminants

RACINE, Wis. (Oct. 16, 2015) – In light of the elevated lead levels recently discovered in the Racine water system, Culligan Water of Union Grove encourages community members to seek proactive water treatment solutions.

The Racine Water Utility performed annual tap water tests in 2014, which revealed out of compliance lead levels. The utility notified approximately 34,000 customers with a brochure sent out this month. After two series of tests in hundreds of local homes, an announcement yesterday indicated that levels are back in compliance.

“We’re thankful that the water has been deemed safe,” said Don Meredith, president and manager of Meredith’s Culligan Water, which has locations in Union Grove, Milwaukee, and Kenosha, Wis., as well as Forest Park, Ill.

The utility’s brochure explained the potential health risks lead poses. Infants and young children who drink water with lead levels beyond U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards could experience delays in physical or mental development.

While the Racine Water Utility is now in compliance with EPA regulations, the utility also explained to owners of homes constructed before 1940 that “the water service line is probably lead.”

“The problem with some contaminants like lead is that you can’t taste, smell or see it in your drinking water,” said Meredith. “That’s why water tests are so important.”

The local Union Grove Culligan dealer urges residents to test their water and seek solutions if contamination is present. Culligan, which provides state-certified water tests for lead and other contaminants, recommends regular testing of water, as well as using point-of-use filtration technology that is National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certified for lead removal.

The Racine Water Utility provided helpful information about purchasing or leasing a home treatment device, such as a reverse osmosis system. Culligan provides a variety of water treatment solutions, including a reverse osmosis system, which reduces the presence of lead, arsenic, sodium, chloride, fluoride and radium among other contaminants and harmful microorganisms.

“Our top priority is keeping your family and home’s water safe,” said Meredith. “Great tasting water is just an added bonus.”
