Dr. Mustafa K. Baskaya joins executive committee

MADISON, Wis. – UW Health neurosurgeon Dr. Daniel Resnick was elected president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) at the group’s recent annual meeting. CNS is the largest neurosurgical society in the world with more than 8000 neurosurgeon members.

Resnick is currently professor and vice chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. A native of Philadelphia, Resnick earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, served a residency at the University of Pittsburgh and a fellowship at the University of New Mexico. He also earned a master’s degree in neuroscience for his spinal-cord injury research.

Resnick is an expert in the use of comparative effectiveness research to inform and improve spine care and has, as a consequence, become an advocate for spine surgeons and spine patients. In addition to authoring more than 175 peer-reviewed publications and serving on many international committees, Resnick serves on the National Football League’s spine and spinal cord committee.

Joining Resnick in CNS leadership is fellow UW neurosurgeon Dr. Mustafa K. Baskaya, who was named ex-officio to the CNS executive committee. A native of Aydin, Turkey, Dr. Baskaya has been a faculty member in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health for eight years. He is currently associate professor of neurological surgery and director of the Skull Base Surgery Program.

Baskaya has had post-graduate training in neurosurgery in Turkey, Japan and the United States and has received many national and international awards for his research and clinical care. Baskaya is an expert in surgical management of intracranial aneurysms, subarachnoid hemorrhage, skull base and deep-seated brain tumors, microsurgical neuroanatomy, and cerebral ischemia. He serves as an associate editor of Neuroanatomy and on the editorial boards of ISNR Neurology, Surgical Neurology International and Contemporary Neurosurgery. “Our school, our department and, especially, our patients, are fortunate to have neurosurgeons of this stature on our team,” says Dr. Robert Dempsey, chairman of neurosurgery. “Congratulations to Drs. Resnick and Baskaya on this acknowledgement of their leadership in the field.”
