Madison, WI – Applications are being accepted for the annual Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship program. Applications are due by 5:00 PM on December 19th. The Scholarship awards in the amount of $750 per awardee will be presented on January 18, 2015 at the Urban League of Greater Madison’s 31st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast.

The Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship Fund was created to honor one of Madison’s most dynamic and visionary leaders, Ms. Betty Franklin-Hammonds. With her passing in April 1999, this scholarship was started through a generous endowment from the Madison Community Foundation with subsequent gifts added by friends, family and people in the community. The Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of graduating seniors seeking to further their education beyond high school, with special attention given to those who have faced particular economic and/or social obstacles on their journey to educational advancement.

The Urban League’s MLK Breakfast is one of the largest family observances of the King Holiday in Wisconsin. It attracts more than 800 youth, families, community leaders, elected officials, educators, and others. It will be held at Edgewood High School with doors open at 7:30 AM. Tickets will be available for purchase online in Mid-December. More information at www.ulgm.org/mlkevents.
