GE Healthcare and Quarles & Brady Lawyers Train Local Aspiring Attorneys

Street Law, Inc. Partnership Prepares Carmen High School of Science and Technology Students for Legal Careers

MILWAUKEE, WIS. (May 13, 2014) — GE Healthcare and Quarles & Brady LLP are partnering with Street Law, Inc. to hold a day-long workshop designed to increase knowledge of and interest in the law and legal careers for 60 students at Carmen High School of Science and Technology. The workshop, to be taught by 20 GE Healthcare and Quarles attorneys, will feature sessions on contract law, employment law (sexual harassment) and legislative advocacy. The workshop will be held on May 14 in the Patrick Ryan Conference Center at Quarles & Brady’s offices in Milwaukee. The program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“Promising young students often start to dream and plan for future careers early in life, and we want to be sure that they are exposed to the possibility of a legal career at this transformational age,” said Jennifer Zerm, Senior Counsel, Commercial & Legal Operations at GE Healthcare. “Those who develop a passion for the law early often go on to become truly exceptional lawyers.”

The Street Law Diversity Pipeline, a law firm-based program, addresses the unique challenges and opportunities available for diversity pipeline programming at law firms. The core activities include a training session for law firm volunteers and participating teachers, classroom visits to a diverse high school class, a one-day event at the law firm for the students and an enhancement activity for the most-interested high school students. The program also includes field trips to law schools and participation, by law students and law school staff, in the one-day event at the law firm. The NALP/Street Law Legal Diversity Pipeline program builds on the successful Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, which has been in operation since 2001, in partnership with the Association of Corporate Counsel.

GE Healthcare attorneys participating in the program include Jennifer Zerm, Craig Wilson, Shannon Henry, Heidi Retzlaff, Rebecca Zimmer, Dan Milbeck, Mark Haberberger and Jocelyn Jurva.

Quarles attorneys participating in the program include Jennifer Rathburn (health law), Cory Nettles (corporate law), Steven Berryman (commercial litigation), Ann Rabe (intellectual property), David Kern (labor & employment). Sean Scullen (labor & employment). Mary Pat Jacoby (employment law), Alyce Katayama (health law), Ave Bie (corporate services), Kevin Long (commercial litigation), Raphael Ramos (health law) and Raphael Ramos (environmental law).

“Quarles & Brady is deeply committed to a diverse and inclusive organization and industry,” said firm chair Kimberly Leach Johnson. “Whatever we can do to encourage students of minority status to consider a career in law is good for them, good for us, good for our clients and good for the profession.”
