Owensboro Health Regional Hospital: Wins ACEC Engineering Excellence Award

MILWAUKEE (February 18, 2014) HGA Architect and Engineers (HGA) has won the Best of State Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Wisconsin for Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky.

“We are proud that the American Council of Engineering Companies recognized Owensboro’s engineering excellence,” said Kurt Spiering, AIA, ACHA, vice president and principal with HGA. “The hospital combines planning, architecture and engineering innovations to help Owensboro achieve its mission of providing exemplary patient care.”

Completed in June 2013, the 780,000-square-foot replacement hospital includes a nine-story bed tower, three-story diagnostic & treatment building, emergency department, women’s center, heart center and outpatient diagnostics center on a 162-acre campus.

The structural system resolved complex challenges involving high-seismic conditions near the New Madrid and Wabash Valley Seismic zones, poor soil conditions, and curvilinear building massing. Structural solutions included bolted flange-plate moment connections, rotated columns to create orthogonal beam-to-column moment connections within a curved building, lightweight concrete combined with composite steel framing to minimize weight and ground improvement techniques.

Additionally, the team utilized Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) to share risk between architect, contractor and owner and realize more than $5 million worth of saving, which was reinvested in building and patient amenities.

The Engineering Excellence Awards honor engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity. The winners will be recognized at ACEC Wisconsin’s annual Awards Banquet March 21 at the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin.
