Salute to America Night is this Friday Night at MIS

By John Wells

Excitement on the track and in the air takes place this Friday night (June 27th) at Madison International Speedway when we host Salute to America Night. Three racing divisions and a spectacular fireworks display will entertain fans of all ages.

An outstanding racing program is on tap with the Big 8 Late Model Series, Great Northern Sportsman Series, and the Vintage cars all in action on Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile.

After twenty-eight late models came to Madison for a race in June, a field approaching or even surpassing forty cars is expected to fight it out for a spot in the 48 lap Big 8 feature. The Great Northern Sportsman Series will be making its MIS debut as one of the largest Sportsman fields at MIS this season is expected. A group of Vintage cars will also be part of the program giving fans a look back at the past.

“This is going to be a great racing program,” said MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg. “The Big 8 guys always put on a good show and there is a lot of excitement building for this race. It’s going to be a very competitive field if our late model race from June is any indication.”

The Great Northern Sportsman Series will be making several appearances this season and it will be their first trip to Madison. “I’m hoping all of our weekly guys will be part of this race, and I know they have several cars who will be competing for the first time here,” added Grueneberg.

But it gets even better than that as Thunder Cat presents the area’s biggest and best fireworks show with the skies lighting up right before your eyes. MIS owner Terry Kunes commented, “I don’t know how these guys (Thunder Cat) do it because each year they come up with a better show than the year before. Our fans will definitely get their money’s worth.”

MIS will also be honoring all military personnel past and present by giving them free admission. Veterans will also be taking part in our opening ceremonies. “We want to make this a special night for all of our fans, but especially out veterans. Free admission is just one small way we can say thank you. But this year we are going to include them in our opening ceremonies too,” said MIS Marketing / PR Director Megan Wood.

Current Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in uniform will also be admitted free.

An open practice session is available for all race teams from Noon – 3:00 on June 27th for just $20.00. Pit gates officially open at 3:30 with practice at 4:45, qualifying at 6:00 and racing at 7:30.

Adult admission is $15.00 with Students (12-17) and Seniors 60+ at $13.00 , Kids 6-11 are $5.00 and under five are free.
