Forest trails still too soft for Off Road Classic

After consultations with the U.S Forest Service officials with the Cable Area Off Road Classic announced today that they will not be able to use the single track trails for their race course this coming weekend. The race typically utilized large portions of the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) trail system between Lake Namakagon and Cable. The new Gravel Grind course, which uses gravel forest roads will now serve as the course for all riders.

Officials say they are disappointed but that they also agree and support the decision to stay off the trails. ‘We host this event to remind riders how amazing our trail system is and to get them here early in the season in the hopes that they will come back a few more times over the summer. It would be counterproductive to have them damage the very trails we are touting’, said James Bolen, director of the Cable Area Chamber of Commerce. Wet weather early this week will give way to sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 60’s Friday and Saturday offering riders a great weekend to ride.
Don’t let the altered course fool you though it’s still very challenging, especially for such and early season race. Ask Gary Crandall who runs the most famous mountain bike race in North America, the Chequemagon Fat Tire Festival. ‘Riders will get a real sample of the rolling, glacial profile that makes our trail system so extraordinary’, he said when asked about this new course. ‘You’ll experience great views of the forest while traversing a lot of the elevation changes you see in the single track. It will be more of a power course but will make for some amazing riding’, he concluded.

The Gravel Grind starts at Lakewods Resort at 10 AM on Saturday May 17th. Online registration closes at 12AM Thursday but riders can still register either Friday night or Saturday morning until 9:30 AM.
