WPPI Energy in Sun Prairie earned the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2012, earning first place in the category for utilities with 1110,000 to 249,999 worker-hours annually.

WPPI Energy, a not-for-profit power supplier to 51 member utilities in Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa, had no work-related reportable injuries or illnesses over the past year.

Bob Rumbaugh, chair of the APPA Safety Committee and energy services consultant at American Municipal Power, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio, presented the award on March 25 during the Engineering & Operations Technical Conference in Kissimmee, Fla.

More than 280 public power utilities entered the annual contest judged by APPA, a national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, locally owned electric utilities.
