Milwaukee, Wis. [June 6, 2013] – The Wisconsin Association of African-American Lawyers (WAAL) takes the lead on “Blazing Your Own Path” at its 23rd annual VelanDale Scholarship Dinner. The event, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Intercontinental Hotel, will share expert advice on professional advancement from nationally acclaimed entertainment Attorney Ricky Anderson, Managing Partner of the Law Firm of Anderson & Smith P.C.

The VelanDale Scholarship Award Dinner recognizes the life and legacy of the Honorable Vel Phillips and attorney W. Dale Phillips. The scholarship is awarded to African-American law students at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin. This year’s theme, “Blazing Your Own Path: The New Rules of Success,” will showcase opportunities for Wisconsin’s minority attorneys to excel in their fields and remain competitive in corporate legal departments and law firms.

Atty. Anderson, the 2013 keynote speaker, helps develop network television, movies, feature films, HBO deals and Pay Per View videos. Atty. Anderson has represented such celebrities as comedian and actor, Steve Harvey; actor, Isaiah Washington of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy; and gospel singer Yolanda Adams; to name a few. From managing Steve Harvey’s controversial 2005 divorce to serving as CEO of CBS Records Inc. and chairman and CEO of the Black Broadcasting Network Inc., Atty. Anderson has become one of the top entertainment lawyers in the U.S.

Phillips, a native of Milwaukee, was the first African-American woman to earn a law degree from the University of Wisconsin. She and her late husband, Dale, partnered in law practice and were active in the civil rights movement. Vel Phillips was the first woman elected to the Milwaukee Common Council, and was the first African-American woman appointed as a Juvenile Court Judge in Branch 13, Milwaukee.

Founded in 1988, WAAL promotes diversity in the legal community via educational outreach, interactions with other bar associations and providing law school scholarships.
