Milwaukee, Wisconsin — Mary Jo Werner, a partner with Wipfli LLP (Wipfli), has earned the Public Service Award from the Wisconsin Association of Homicide Investigators (WAHI) for her contributions to the murder trial of Eric Koula. Werner testified as an expert witness on Koula’s financial status, which was one of the keys to the prosecution establishing the defendant’s motive.

“We are proud of Mary Jo and her contributions to this important trial, as well as her dedication to her clients,” said Rick Dreher, managing partner of Wipfli LLP. “She has been an expert witness and made a difference in so many trials over the years. We are thrilled that WAHI is recognizing her for her work in this area.”

With more than 25 years of experience, Werner leads Wipfli’s tax practice in the La Crosse office and works with hundreds of clients by providing litigation support, fraud and forensic investigations and tax services.

In addition to her work for Wipfli, Werner has served three years on the IRS Taxpayer Advocacy Panel and she is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), where she serves as a liaison between the AICPA and the U.S. Congress. She is also a member of the American, Wisconsin and La Crosse Bar Associations, as well as the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants. A magna cum laude graduate of Loras College, Werner holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, political science and business administration. In addition, she earned her juris doctorate degree from Creighton University where she was a member of the Law Review.

WAHI will present the award to Werner at their Awards Banquet on April 25 in Wisconsin Dells.
