MADISON, WISCONSIN, March 12, 2013 – Project Home’s 12th Annual Hammer with a Heart kicks off this week with the first of nine major home repair projects; the others will be done in early May. Tuesday (3/12) through Thursday (3/14), a Waunakee Remodeling crew will replace Susan and Ken Wulf’s roof and gutters on their Columbus home. Sue and Ken have done a number of their own projects to improve their home, including using marble slabs that used to serve as outer window sills for an old school building, as their new bathroom floor. But with Ken’s foot problems (he recently had surgery on both feet) and Sue’s MS beginning to limit her physically, the couple needs some assistance.

“Every time we had a storm with strong winds, during the last year or so, we would lose a few more shingles off the roof. We couldn’t fix the problem ourselves and were starting to really worry about the damage this could cause to our home. So, having Waunakee Remodeling replace our roof through Hammer with a Heart is a weight lifted off of shoulders that are already carrying a heavy burden due to health issues. Jeff and his crew have been great and they came into our lives when we really needed the help. We will never forget them” said Susan Wulf.

Hammer with a Heart provides free home repair and improvements for low-income homeowners and their families in Dane County who need assistance with health, safety and comfort concerns in their homes. The labor for the nine houses to be repaired this year will be provided by approximately 200 volunteers, and about half of the materials are donated by local companies.

In May, eight other skilled crews will help low-income seniors, veterans, families and Dane county residents with disabilities or significant health issues, receive major repairs to their homes. Many community minded businesses donate, or provide discounts on, materials to make these projects more affordable for the Hammer with a Heart program.

Waunakee Remodeling has been a major sponsor and crew leader for Hammer with a Heart for many years. They provide all of the materials and labor for their “hammer house.” The company truly enjoys meeting the participants and giving back to those who no longer have the resources or ability to tackle necessary home repairs.
