Village Hive: First shared use kitchen in Portage County to open this October

Amherst, Wisconsin-September 8, 2013-The first shared use kitchen in Portage County will open in Amherst this October. The Village Hive: Bakery and Local Foods Collective (formerly New Village Bakery) has been remodeled and is a licensed, commercial kitchen available for rent 24/7.

New businesses, who lease space, will have the option of marketing their food products cooperatively through the retail store attached to the kitchen as well as developing wholesale markets for their goods.

Wisconsin State law requires that many food items be prepared in an inspected and licensed commercial kitchen. A shared use kitchen, like the Village Hive, is a certified, fully equipped commercial kitchen for use by growers, pizza makers, wedding and birthday cakes designers, food processors, bakers, caterers, cooking classes, restaurants, chefs, special food vendors, and groups. A separate space for ingredient storage and product packaging is also offered.

New tenants of The Village Hive will include “Baking for Friends”, a business specializing in pies and sweets, “Sweet Elegance by Diana” offers several varieties of handmade toffees beautifully packaged and perfect for use as holiday gifts, and a small enterprise offering fresh soups, bread, and rolls.

“This is an opportunity for food entrepreneurs to produce and sell their food products in a supportive atmosphere” says owner, Amy Powers.

Space is still open for food entrepreneurs interested in starting or moving their business to a licensed kitchen.
