Wauwatosa, Wis., December 11, 2013 – The Forest Exploration Center is pleased to announce that the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s chartering authority has approved the charter application for The University Laboratory School. The charter application was approved with the option to open in either Fall 2014 or 2015. The Forest Exploration Center is establishing a plan for the successful opening of The University Laboratory School.

The University Laboratory School is the first regional public charter school in the State of Wisconsin, and will emphasize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), environmental education and project-based learning. It will integrate students across different regions, ethnicities, abilities and socio-economic strata.

Situated between two key economic development clusters, biomedical engineering and fresh water sciences, the school is ideally located on the regional Innovation Campus close to the Regional Medical Center and will be housed in the historic Eschweiler Buildings.

The historic Eschweiler Buildings were originally used for the Milwaukee County School of Agriculture and Domestic Economy, which opened in 1912. The Forest Exploration Center’s University Laboratory School project will involve rehabilitating these buildings and restoring them to their original purpose of public education.
