Winging it for charity
New Berlin, WI. – Sauce drenched fingers will circle July 29th to celebrate one of the holiest of holidays—National Chicken Wing Day. But in addition to celebrating the humble wing, the holiday will help to stock a local charity’s food shelf.
Anyone who brings in a non-perishable food item to Quaker Steak & Lube, 4900 S. Moorland Rd. , from July 22 to July 29th will receive a voucher for a free 6-pack of wings on July 29th, National Chicken Wing Day. The donations will benefit the New Berlin Food Pantry, a pantry that runs on a strictly voluntary basis—it’s operated by volunteers, runs strictly off donations and serves approximately 40 families per week.
“Americans eat 13.25 billion chicken wings per year—that’s enough to give 42 wings to every man, woman and child in the country,” said Leah Kusch, marketing/activities director at New Berlins Quaker Steak & Lube. “People definitely love their wings, and we encourage them to celebrate it, but by also encouraging the food donations, we make sure everyone is fed.”
Ever since Teressa Belissimo put wings to sauce in 1964, America has had a love affair with the Buffalo Wing. And it shows in everything from the annual “Wing Bowl” competition in Philadelphia the weekend before the Super Bowl to wing-flavored chips and drinks, Americans cannot get enough chicken wings. The entire Quaker Steak & Lube chain has served over one billion wings all by itself.
“With National Chicken Wing Day, we’re out to prove that the chicken wing isn’t just a side dish—it’s a full on meal,” says Kusch. “And not only is it a meal, it’s a meal that will help others have meals, thanks to this glorious holiday.”
