TOMAHAWK, Wis. – The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $6,000 grant to the Friends of Lester Public Library of Rome to help fund the construction of a 5,000 sq. ft. addition to the existing 2,500 sq. ft. Lester Public Library of Rome.

According to Jeanne Osgood, capital campaign chair, the $900,000 project will expand the building’s capacity from 30 people to 100, allow for better wheelchair and walker access, and create a larger children’s area, a quiet reading/study area, a computer area and a community room for summer reading programs, group activities and cultural events. The new addition will also be environmentally friendly.

“The Lester Public Library of Rome serves all types of community members, including children, adults, families and senior citizens, but it is in need of an expansion,” said Osgood. “Thanks to the help of the Plum Creek Foundation, we can provide a better space for meetings, group activities and educational programs that will enhance learning experiences for our community members.”

On May 25, the library will host the Not Your Average Triathlon (NYAT) fundraiser to raise money for the new addition. The triathlon fundraiser offers competitors the option to walk/run 1-3 miles, bike 3-10 miles and kayak or canoe 1-3 miles. Construction on the building is expected to take place in 2015. A grand opening is planned for late 2015 or early 2016.

The Friends of Lester Public Library of Rome works to expand the partnership between the library and the surrounding communities by advocating continued growth and development of resources and facilities, promoting community awareness and understanding of the library and encouraging community support of library services and projects.
