Milwaukee – November 20, 2013 – Medical Companion, LLC., a healthcare technology company, announced today that Sue Ela, former executive vice president and chief operating officer of Aurora Health Care, has been named as its chief executive officer.

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Joe Kohli, a practicing orthopedic surgeon with Aurora Health Care, Medical Companion is an innovative healthcare technology company focused on solving healthcare problems. The company is founded on the belief that practitioners can better care for patients by improving and simplifying the processes in which patients and doctors communicate.

“Medical Companion was born out of my personal experiences when my mother was in the hospital and as a physician, which is a unique position that not many in the healthcare technology industry share,” said Kohli. “In addition to being a great communicator and leader, Sue’s vast experience in healthcare, as well as her administrative knowledge made her our number one candidate to take Medical Companion to the next level.”

Medical Companion’s suite of products includes surgicalCompanion, which provides real-time communication between surgeons and their patients, as well as their families before, during and after a surgical procedure. Currently in use in five Milwaukee-area hospitals, the company plans to aggressively expand the use of surgicalCompanion regionally starting in the next few weeks. In addition, the company is actively developing products that provide secure and confidential communication tools which foster improved communications between physicians and nurses with their patients. Products in development include the use of motion technology to aid in evaluating and treating patients with joint injuries.

In her new role, Ela is responsible for managing the operations of the organization as well as establishing the overall vision, while ensuring that the company remains focused on patient satisfaction, quality patient outcomes and efficiencies in healthcare.

“My entire career I have been a healthcare advocate focused on quality patient care,” said Ela. “It is exciting to partner with a visionary company that is working to revolutionize the way patients and doctors communicate. I welcome the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and look forward to working with the dedicated Medical Companion team to innovate patient care for the future.”

Ela brings with her more than 20 years of experience in healthcare and has served in a number of executive positions for Aurora Health Care. In her most recent role, Ela was responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all clinical areas, including hospitals, clinics, physician practices, home care, and hospice for the more than 25,000 Aurora employees and 500 service sites under her supervision.

Ela received a bachelor of nursing and master of science in nursing from Marquette University and began her career working as a registered nurse in Milwaukee. She currently serves as a visiting scholar for the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s College of Nursing, where she advises on opportunities for collaboration given the rapid transitions in healthcare delivery.
