Madison 56ers: NPSL team hosts sister city club

Press Release
Date: May 8, 2013

Blau-Weis Freiburg of Freiburg, Germany comes to Madison to face off with our local 2012 NPSL Midwest Division Champions and National Semifinalists, Madison 56ers on May 25 at historic Breese Stevens Stadium on Madison’s near East side. Kick off is at 7pm.

Freiburg is Madison’s sister city in Western part of Germany and this summer will see the two cities celebrate 25 years of that collaboration. This June a delegation from Madison, headed by our Mayor Paul Soglin, will travel to Freiburg to mark the occasion.

56ers are a local team, competing in the National Premier Soccer League, the fourth division of soccer in United States. The team is made up of mostly collegiate players, including five players currently on the University of Wisconsin-Madison squad. In addition the team boasts an international flavor, with players from Costa Rica, England and Romania rounding out the roster.

Jim Launder, who guided UW-Madison to its only National Championship in 1995, coaches the 56ers. Also this year the team is boosted by the return of Carlos McCrary, reigning MVP of NPSL.

“NPSL is the highest level in soccer in Wisconsin and we are extremely excited to have an opportunity to play the Germans from our sister city, Freiburg” said Jim Launder, Head Coach of Madison 56ers. “We hope soccer fans from the area will come to the game at historic Breese Stevens Stadium.”

The Red Rebels, the team’s “European style” supporters group, also add to the unique soccer atmosphere during the game. Families are welcome to enjoy the festivities. There is halftime entertainment for children. Food, ice cream, soda, water and are available for purchase at the game. Also, beer from the Great Dane Brewery is sold during the NPSL games.

56ers open their regular season this Friday, May 17th at Breese Stevens, with a 7pm kick off against the Aris Eau Claire/La Crosse. In addition to the Freiburg friendly, 56ers will also Portsmouth U FC of Portsmouth, England on July 2nd. This should be another entertaining international soccer game to watch in Madison at Breese Stevens.
