Historic Milwaukee Inc.: Hires new executive director

Stacy Swadish is the new Executive Director of Historic Milwaukee, Inc., the Milwaukee nonprofit dedicated to increasing awareness and commitment to Milwaukee’s history, architecture and the preservation of our built environment. Historic Milwaukee guides architecture walking tours, hosts panel discussions on development, and presents the annual Doors Open and Spaces & Traces events. Through new programs like Doors Open and Envisioning the Seen, Historic Milwaukee has grown its audience to 60,000 people annually, increased membership to over 1,000, and cultivated a volunteer base of over 600. Swadish is excited to join the organization, and continue growing its mission.

Swadish has more than more 25 years experience as a nonprofit manager, fundraiser and journalist. She most recently worked as the Vice President for Development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. Other nonprofit positions were with Alverno College and the School Sisters of St. Francis.

Swadish has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in business: organizational leadership and quality from Marian University. Swadish also earned the Certified Fundraising Executive credential in 2003.

Swadish, a West Allis native, lives in Brookfield with her husband John Kosmatka and children, Edward and Ellen. In addition to her love of history and architecture, she enjoys gardening, Jane Austen novels, and upcycling furniture.
