Work is now complete on a $1.5 million project to repair and modernize two rest areas along I-90/94 in Juneau County.

Over the last six weeks, workers repaired pavement to both rest area ramps, parking lots and sidewalks. Other improvements include: new roofs; installation of high-efficiency LED lighting; interior painting; construction of picnic shelters at each site; and new family-assisted restrooms to provide better accessibility to families with small children and others.

The rest areas are located along eastbound and westbound I-90/94 between Mauston and Wisconsin Dells and each site currently accommodates some 1,000 visitors daily. The two rest areas originally opened in 1964 and were last remodeled in 1992.

“Wisconsin’s 30 rest areas serve an important public safety function, providing travelers a place to unwind and get refreshed before continuing their journey,” said Richard Schmale with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Highway Maintenance. Local community rehabilitation programs handle daily maintenance duties at Wisconsin rest areas and seasonal waysides providing employment to some 300 people.
