ZBB Energy: To provide power management system to support Department of Defense net zero energy installation program

ZBB Awarded Contract to Deliver Uniquely Designed Power Management System for Transportable U.S. Military Application Integrating PV and Diesel Power Generation

MILWAUKEE, WI–(Marketwire – March 14, 2012) – ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSE Amex: ZBB), the leading developer of intelligent, renewable energy power platforms, announced today a contract from a Florida-based solar integrator to provide an integrated, continuous power ZBB EnerSystem™. This technology combines ZBB EnerStore™ flow-battery technology and ZBB EnerSection™ power and energy control capability for use in a unique application designed to operate in both grid-connected and transportable micro-grid applications at an undisclosed U.S. Military base.

The installation dovetails with a multi-year project at the base to increase energy efficiency, incorporate renewables, and increase overall energy reliability and independence with respect to the availability of the civilian grid. As part of the Department of Defense’s numerous goals relating to increasing renewable energy use, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007 (NDAA07) has mandated that the Department of Defense produce or procure 25% of the total installation energy requirement from renewable sources. The Florida-based integrator was awarded a demonstration grant to deploy and trial the micro-grid system using ZBB capabilities that offer a hybridized solution to integrate the mix of renewables, diesel and energy storage. The technology will demonstrate the ability to provide a continuous power supply to local loads on the base regardless of time of day, intermittent renewables or level of stored energy, while minimizing the use of diesel fuel.

The ZBB EnerSystem will be used continuously in an ongoing operational mode in conjunction with the base grid loop, and will also demonstrate the ability to disconnect from the grid and operate as a micro-grid in ‘island mode,’ and then seamlessly synchronize back to the grid interconnection as appropriate. The trial at the base will monitor the overall system and will focus on the power control for micro-grid stability, power quality and minimization of fuel use.

“The Department of Defense continues to recognize the value of ZBB’s capabilities,” said Eric Apfelbach, president and CEO of ZBB Energy. “The manner by which the ZBB EnerSystem can be uniquely configured to deliver modular and scalable solutions positions us to do very well in this market, serving a variety of applications, including micro-grids that are designed to optimize energy availability from a variety of resources. ZBB has now won contracts to deliver innovative mobile, transportable and stationary power management solutions to the military, and we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to showcase this installation as a great example of how the ZBB EnerStore and ZBB EnerSection provide key integration, power management and energy security.”
