Filmmakers show how they are futuremakers

WAUSAU – Jimi Shaw, Michael Redig and Casey Nelson, visual communication students at Western Technical College, earned the top prize of $2,000 in the Futuremaker Video Competition sponsored by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS).

The winning entry, “The Hammer that Hit the Nail,” shows how Shaw, Redig and Nelson are making their futures and living their passion as filmmakers while studying at Western. In the short video, Shaw describes how college helps them network with others and use the skills they are learning now to develop their business. The students are collaborating to form a video production company.

Candace Wetter, a student from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, accepted the $1,500 second prize and Sharon Marie, a Gateway Technical College student, received the $1,000 third prize.

The finalists received their prizes Friday at the Wisconsin Technical Colleges’ District Boards’ Association luncheon in Wausau. The winning videos, along with all the entries, are available for viewing at http://www.wearefuturemakers.com/videocompetition/gallery.

“We appreciate all our students who entered the competition this year,” said Kyle Schwarm, video competition coordinator. “Their inspiring stories provide us a nice sample of the thousands of students who have chosen to pursue their passions at Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges.”

The WTCS has 16 technical college districts throughout Wisconsin, offering more than 300 programs awarding two-year associate degrees, one and two-year technical diplomas and short-term technical diplomas. In addition, the System is the major provider of customized training and technical assistance to Wisconsin’s business and industry community. More than half of all adults in Wisconsin have accessed the technical colleges for education and training. Find more about educational programs at http://www.witechcolleges.org.
