Wis. Sustainable Business Council: Upper Iowa University-Madison achieves Green Master Award

Upper Iowa University-Madison is one of a select group of companies to earn the designation of “Green Master”, the highest tier in the Green Masters Program established by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council. As a Green Master, Upper Iowa University-Madison has performed actions in each of the nine sustainability areas and has scored in the top twenty percent of all participating companies.

“Upper Iowa University-Madison efforts towards sustainability improve the infrastructure at their Madison campus location and also place them as an advocate for Sustainability Education,” says Tom Eggert, Executive Director of the WI Sustainable Business Council.

Founded in 1857, Upper Iowa University is a private, not-for-profit university providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs and leadership development opportunities to over 6,800 students—nationally and internationally—at its Fayette campus and learning centers worldwide. Upper Iowa University is a recognized innovator in offering accredited, quality programs through flexible, multiple delivery systems, including online and independent study.

The academic components of the sustainability efforts at Upper Iowa University-Madison include a Business Sustainability Certificate and a biology course that examines the importance for businesses to pursue sustainability. Furthermore efforts were made to work with their landlord and Madison Metro to improve install high efficiency heating and air conditioning units and to provide public transportation options for students. Together these efforts show a high level of dedication to improved sustainability for their current campus and the future of their students.

We view environmental stewardship of our resources very seriously throughout Upper Iowa University”.

Applicants to the Green Masters Program are judged on a comprehensive range of sustainability issues, from energy to water use to educational outreach and governance. Over 90 Wisconsin businesses are participating in the program where the top twenty percent achieve the highest “Green Master” designation.
