5.16.2012 – PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville and its Distance Learning Center (UW-Platteville Online) have announced the winner of the Dawn Drake Excellence in Distance Education Scholarship.

Kari Nuszkiewicz, of Weston, received the scholarship, worth $500, during a graduation banquet on Friday, May 11 where she also received her master’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in victim and offender services, and a Child Advocacy Studies Certificate. Nuszkiewicz also holds a bachelor’s degree in child psychology.

The scholarship-established by Dawn Drake, executive director of alternative delivery systems at UW-Platteville-is awarded each spring to a degree-seeking student who has successfully completed at least one course in a UW-Platteville Distance Education program and has a GPA of at least 3.0. The scholarship is given in recognition of the important role that distance education has played in Dawn’s life, both personally and professionally. As well as the many sacrifices distance learners make to successfully juggle education, career, and family.

“Kari was not only an excellent student, but her ability to be successful while maintaining her volunteer job with CourtWatch, in which her responsibilities are to record courtroom outcome and case data for domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse cases to assist in the protection of client victims and their families, was superior,” said Cheryl Banachowski-Fuller, director of the master’s program in criminal justice.

Nuszkiewicz hopes to develop programs for mandated reporters and pursue a career in forensic interviewing.
