UW-Madison: Be aware of road closures near the Charter street heating plant

MADISON – The removal of rail at the Orchard Street railroad crossing is underway and will continue through today (Friday June 1).

Orchard Street is currently closed due a city road reconstruction project.

On Wednesday, June 6, removal of rail at the Charter/Spring Street intersection will begin as early as possible. That intersection will be closed all day to complete underground utility tie-ins and paving.

On Thursday, June 7, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. rails at the Mills Street crossing will be removed.

The rail switches are being removed because they are no longer needed because coal is no longer being delivered to the Charter Street Heating Plant.

The line north of Dayton Street will be re-graded to provide better drainage and the rail line south of the heating plant is being removed completely.

On another front, Observatory Drive between Park Street and Lot 10 at the Education Building will be closed in both directions on Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8, for the installation of pilings for the Radio Hall tunnel utility project.
