St. Norbert College: Receives national recognition for community service

DE PERE, WIS. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) honored St. Norbert College as a leader among institutions of higher education for their support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. St. Norbert was admitted to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction for its strong institutional commitment to service and compelling campus-community partnerships that produce measurable results for the community. St. Norbert was the only college/university in the state to receive the honor with distinction.

The Corporation for National and Community Service, which has administered the Honor Roll since 2006, admitted a total of 642 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth. Of that total, 513 were named to the Honor Roll, 110 received the recognition of Honor Roll with distinction, 14 were identified as finalists, and five received the Presidential Award.

“This recognition highlights St. Norbert College’s commitment to the community and the common good, a central part of the college’s mission. It is also recognizes the community partners and donors who support service-learning experiences for our students,” said Nancy Mathias, director of the Sturzl Center for Community Service and Learning.

“In the past year St. Norbert students provided nearly 20,000 hours of service to the local community, across the nation and the world. Through their service work, students mentored and tutored youth, helped build homes, researched needs in the community, worked with people experiencing homelessness and poverty, developed sustainable environmental practices, raised money for many good causes, and participated in a host of other projects,” Mathias added.
