$1 = 3 Meals for Those Facing Hunger in Southwestern Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – As winter approaches, thousands of area families will face a very difficult choice – heat their homes or put food on the table. To ease hunger for these families, area supermarkets will Check Out Hunger in their local communities, giving customers an opportunity to add a cash donation to their grocery bill or to donate pre-packed bags of groceries.

Check Out Hunger proceeds benefit the NBC15 Share Your Holidays to eliminate hunger campaign which raises meals for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, a nonprofit organization that serves families and individuals facing hunger in 16 southwestern Wisconsin counties. In 2012, NBC15 Share Your Holidays aims to raise 1.7 million meals.

From October 29 – December 9 Check Out Hunger donations in any amount can be made at area Hy-Vee, Metcalfe’s Market, Copps Food Centers, and Pick ’n Save locations. At Woodman’s Food Markets (Beloit, Janesville, Madison and Sun Prairie), you can purchase and donate pre-packed bags of groceries to the campaign through December 24. At Whole Foods Market Madison you can donate your reusable bag 10-cent refunds through December 31. For every $1 donated, three meals can be provided to someone facing hunger.

In its 17th year, the NBC15 Share Your Holidays to eliminate hunger campaign is the largest food/fund drive to help families and individuals facing hunger in southwestern Wisconsin, raising 22 million meals to date.
