When you think of an architectural and historic tour, it is assumed that you will see architectural features and learn the history of existing buildings.

But what about the buildings that have been razed, those buildings that are gone from our landscape? How can those in contemporary Milwaukee explore demolished buildings from our city’s past?

Historic Milwaukee, Inc. has the answer to this seeming conundrum.

HMI is to sponsor a unique special tour guided Yance Marti, the author of Missing Milwaukee: The Lost Buildings of Downtown on Friday, May 11 at 5:30pm, in which attendees will have the opportunity to explore the vanished buildings of Milwaukee’s downtown. Tour tickets are $15 per person for HMI members and $20 per person for non-members. A package that includes the tour ticket and a copy of Missing Milwaukee is $25 per person for HMI members and $30 for non-members.

Missing Milwaukee

The unique tour stems from Marti’s recently published book, Missing Milwaukee, which presents vintage photographs of a number of downtown buildings that have been demolished.

The photographs were taken by local photographers, Alan Magayne-Roshak and Gordy Simons, during the late 1960 through the early 1980s and show the architecture lost during that time of change for the city.

Marti, a local architecture historian and web developer of OldMilwaukee.net, researched the featured structuresand revealed their importance to downtown’s history, while working with Simons and Magayne-Roshak to reveal a side of the city that younger readers have never seen.

Some of the buildings documented in Missing Milwaukee include: the Norman Apartments, Belmont Hotel, Metropolitan Block, Pabst Building, Chapman’s Department Store, Chicago and Northwestern Railway Depot, and the Elk’s Club.
