Madison, Wis. (May 22, 2012) – Transfer student and Waunakee native Michael Stluka received the news in an unlikely spot: he was riding in a Madison Metro bus.

“I was really shocked. I turned my phone off, then back on when I saw the email. I thought ‘that can’t be right. Someone’s joking with me.’ I started calling my family; I was so excited about it.”

The senior Economics major has been awarded a $10,000 Rath Distinguished Scholarship. The Rath Distinguished Scholarships are awarded to “selected students exhibiting supreme academic excellence, unique community involvement, and dedicated campus leadership.” The Rath Scholarship is only available to students attending Wisconsin’s private colleges and universities.

“Indy” (his nickname) has been a busy man for the past several years. An internship with State Senator Julie Lassa (D-Stevens Point) working on economic policy has led to some high-profile leadership roles in the life of the City of Madison. Indy has been a student-citizen voice, working on affordable housing initiatives in the City of Madison. He’s been appointed to the City of Madison’s Housing Committee. More recently he served as Chair for the Mifflin Planning Committee, working on downsizing the annual ‘Block Party’ event and seeking solutions for a decades-long cycle of assaults and violence that has marred the event. Those efforts were, for this year, successful.

Indy will be a Resident Assistant this fall, and hopes to go to law school in the future. But for now, he’s letting this award sink in. “Getting a significant scholarship like this really helps me out,” Indy says. “It really blew me away.”
