Dr. Dean Pribbenow appointed vice president for academic affairs
Madison, Wis. (April 10, 2012) – Edgewood College today announced that Dr. Dean Pribbenow, Ph.D. will become the next Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Pribbenow currently serves as Dean of the School of Integrative Studies at the College, a position he has held for more than five years.
“Dean Pribbenow emerged as the consensus choice during the search process,” President Dan Carey said. “He brings a wealth of expertise in enhancing student learning, supporting faculty excellence, and strengthening communities—central aspects of our academic and strategic plans. As a proven strategic leader, Dean will play a critical role in Academic Affairs and across the College as we pursue our vision.”
Dr. Pribbenow has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Luther College, a Master of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Most recently he completed the highly-competitive Senior Leadership Academy of the Council of Independent Colleges/American Academic Leadership Institute.
Dr. Pribbenow remains active presenting and writing in the areas of integrative teaching and learning, civic engagement, and faculty development, and he has been recognized for his leadership in the development of interdisciplinary general education curriculum, curricular programs that foster personal and social responsibility, and scholarship of teaching and learning initiatives. He recently was recognized by both the Wisconsin Campus Compact and the Bonner Foundation for achievement in community-based learning programs.
“I am humbled by this opportunity to provide academic leadership at a College that I love,” Dr. Pribbenow said. “We have benefited from all those who have come before us—their commitment to the liberal arts in the Dominican tradition, their embracing of the professions as unique expressions of the liberal arts, their vigilance in discerning how our values and impulses toward social justice called them to respond to the needs of the time, and their vision. And now, we engage in this same stewardship for current and future generations.” As Edgewood College builds upon its strengths and addresses challenges, Dr. Pribbenow noted that “My work as Chief Academic Officer will be marked by the centering of learning and the academic mission, an emphasis on collaborative relationships and strengthened communication, and the embracing of the interconnectedness of the College and the community.”
Dr. Pribbenow’s official start date is July 1, 2012. His service follows that of Dr. Mary Kelly-Powell, RN, Ph.D. who is retiring after serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs for seven years. Dr. Kelly-Powell joined the Edgewood College faculty in 1996, became chair of the Nursing Department in 1999, and served in that role until 2005 when she became Academic Dean.
