DATCP: Brancel announces Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight the 2012 Cow of the Year

MADISON – Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Secretary Ben Brancel announced today Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight as the 2012 Wisconsin Cow of the Year. Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight is a Brown Swiss cow, bred and owned by Tom and Joan Oberhaus of Cozy Nook Farm in Waukesha.

“I am pleased to announce Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight as the 2012 Wisconsin Cow of the Year and an outstanding representative of excellence in production and genetics,” said Brancel. “Congratulations to Tom and Joan Oberhaus for this recognition of their commitment to the quality of the Brown Swiss breed and the success of Wisconsin’s dairy industry.”

The Cow of the Year Proclamation will be presented during the International Brown Swiss Show on Thursday, October 4 at World Dairy Expo in Madison. Brancel and 65th Alice in Dairyland Rochelle Ripp will make the presentation.

Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight is classified EX-92 2E. When she was age 6-03, Twylight produced 35,790 pounds of milk, 1,140 pounds protein and 1,514 pounds of fat in 365 days. Her record was even higher at age 4-01 when she produced 39,682 pounds of milk, 1,303 pounds of protein and 1,569 pounds of fat. Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight has a lifetime production record of 191,776 pounds of milk and counting since she calved September 1.

The ability of Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight to transmit outstanding genetics is at the top of her achievements. Her first two daughters both scored Excellent at their first opportunity and have outstanding production, reproduction and transmitting ability. On the most current United States Department of Agriculture sire summary, among the top 30 sires in the breed, eight of them are Twylight sons or grandsons.

A Brown Swiss breed representative was selected as the 2012 Cow of the Year according to a succession plan among the seven major dairy breeds, as determined by the Wisconsin Purebred Dairy Cattle Association. Members of the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Association selected Cozy Nook Pronto Twylight for this honor as the breed representative.
