2012 take a stake in the lakes days shoreline debris collection

(Madison, WI) The annual Take a Stake in the Lakes shoreline trash and aquatic debris collection begins next week. Dane County Lakes Management barges will pickup aquatic trash and debris from Lake Mendota and Lake Kegonsa shoreline residents’ piers beginning on Monday, June 11 and on Lake Monona and Waubesa starting beginning Monday, June 18. Barges will make ONE pass around the lake starting at 6 a.m. Monday morning. Aquatic debris must be on shoreline residents’ piers by 6 a.m. Monday even though the barges may not get to everyone’s pier on the first day.

The following items will be collected: Aquatic vegetation (lake weeds, algae), debris washed up on shore (trash, dead fish, etc.)
The following items will not be collected: Yard waste or brush (grass clippings, leaves, tree limbs), household waste (garbage, pet waste, etc.)

Questions about this shoreline cleanup should be directed to Rhea Stangel-Maier, Dane County Parks Volunteer Coordinator, (608) 224-3601. This year is the 25th anniversary of Take a Stake in the Lakes Days. Over the past 25 years, thousands of volunteers have cleaned up innumerable tons of garbage from Dane County’s waterways, shorelines and more. The Dane County Lakes & Watershed Commission is partnering with the Clean Lakes Alliance to expand the annual event. A complete listing of all events during 2012 Take a Stake in the Lakes Days 25th Anniversary is available at www.takeastakeinthelakes.com. Highlights include clean ups on June 9 and 16 and Paddle to Work Day on June 14.

The 25-year anniversary celebration will continue At Jazz in the Park (www.jazzatwingra.com) at Wingra Park on Saturday June 16, from 2-5 p.m. Volunteers should wear their favorite Take a Stake in the Lakes t-shirt from the past 25 years to gain entry to the Clean Lakes Alliance tent. Past and current volunteers, coordinators and groups will be recognized for taking a stake in the lakes over the past quarter century.
