LAS VEGAS, NV – Hoping to capitalize on all of the commercial construction activity going on in Sun Prairie, Council President Zachary Weber and Economic & Community Development Director Neil Stechschulte set out to cover as much of the 2 million s.f. of retailers, hotels, restaurants, Realtors and developers as they could at the first day of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) convention, also known as RECon 2012.

The event is one of the largest conventions in North America, and is the world’s largest gathering of retail real estate professionals. Over 30,000 attendees are expected at this year’s event. ICSC estimates that approximately 50 percent of the retail real estate industry’s shopping center leases are signed or conceived during RECon.

“We know that the connections and meetings we were involved in when we came out in 2007 helped get Target and Costco to locate in Prairie Lakes in Sun Prairie’s Westside Neighborhood. With both Woodman’s and Costco opening this fall, and Marcus Theatres and Wal-Mart planning new facilities, we’re in a great position to effectively market to other retailers about locating in Sun Prairie.” said Council President Zachary Weber. “We are here in support of a couple of potential projects in our community, as well as to market our own properties in the TIF 9/St. Mary’s area. Sun Prairie’s commercial prospects are thriving because of our excellent relationship with developers, and our ability to act as partners in getting commercial retail to our community.”

City representatives will participate in scheduled developer meetings as requested, and will collect specific contact information with the proper company officials for a variety of stores and uses. According to Economic & Community Development Director Neil Stechschulte, the real work begins after the convention. “Our primary objective will be to establish more formal discussions with several potential users and tenants after RECon 2012 is done. We are making every effort to introduce ourselves to regional real estate representatives of users that would be a great fit for Sun Prairie. Now we know who those people are, we’ll start the process of getting Sun Prairie on their radar right away.”

The City of Sun Prairie is the only municipality from the Madison/Dane County area attending the annual ICSC event.
