American Speed Association: Rusty Wallace among drivers practicing at the Milwaukee Mile on May 30 practice day

He retired from NASCAR competition in 2005, and for the first time, NASCAR champion driver Rusty Wallace is returning to the driver’s seat at one of his all-time favorite race tracks.

Wallace will join other competitors, including many ECHO and ECHO Bear Cat Touring Stars of the American Speed Association® Midwest Tour presented by SCAG Power Equipment and Lester Buildings, in a day-long practice session in his own super late model on Wednesday, May 30th at The Milwaukee Mile.

It will be valuable track time, as the 1989 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver recently announced his intention to come out of retirement to race at the historic one-mile oval in the Tuesday night, June 12th Swiss Colony Howie Lettow Memorial 150 presented by raceteamgear.com .

In Wallace’s formative years, the hungry St. Louis, MO short tracker competed in several USAC Stock Car and ASA National Tour races at the Mile, which proved to be a solid training ground for his efforts on NASCAR super speedways.

It was traditionally the largest speedway he raced on, and he did with much success. Before he began racing full-time in NASCAR in 1984, Wallace raced in several races at the Mile each season, and recorded five combined wins in USAC Stock Cars and ASA National Tour cars there.

Wallace is entered to race in the Tuesday night, June 12th event. It will be the first time he has competed in a race against the stars of the traveling ASA Midwest Tour. This special May 30th practice day will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. to all competitors in the three divisions racing on June 12th.

Including Rusty Wallace, over 55 drivers have expressed their desire to take part in the May 30th session. This turnout speaks volumes as to the interest in the racing community, and for Midwest short track racers eager to get the chance – just as an aspiring Rusty Wallace had – in competing on the historic Milwaukee Mile on Tuesday night, June 12th.

Teams are strongly encouraged to pre-register for the May 30 Milwaukee Mile practice day on http://www.asamidwesttour.com.

This practice session was initially scheduled for May 22nd.

On the May 30th practice day, fans can watch FOR FREE from the infield. Fan pit passes will be made available for $35. The grandstands will not be open.

Rusty Wallace will be racing against NASCAR stars and a field full of the premier super late model racers in the country. Joining Wallace in the Tuesday night, June 12th race are Wisconsin NASCAR champion and reigning Daytona 500 champion Matt Kenseth, Kenseth’s son Ross, 16-year old Chase Elliott – son of 1988 NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, with NASCAR drivers David Ragan and David Stremme racing in their own super late models.
